If the designer creates the website using responsive design, then the website will resize according to the viewport. For example, in the website opened on the laptop if there are ten design components then chances are that in the mobile version, there will be the same ten components. This is like one size fits all.
However, the design layout of the laptop viewport would not be the same as the mobile viewport. The desktop screen is usually divided into 12 columns, on the other hand, the tablet is divided into 4 columns, and the mobile screen is divided into 2 columns. The width sizes are variable according to the screen sizes.
The best part of a responsive design strategy is that the developers do not need to resize for all frames. Using plugins like Responsify, it is easy to implement a responsive design strategy. However, you cannot have every component on the mobile version the same as the desktop version.
If the designer creates the website using an adaptive design, then the website will change its view according to the given frame. Unlike responsive design, in adaptive design, you have to design frames according to the ratio of the device. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
This design strategy is often used when there is no need to have all components of the website on the same page. For example, Twitter’s mobile website version and desktop version are not the same. In the desktop version, many components are not present in the mobile version. The approach is to use fewer components when the viewport size is smaller.
The best part of responsive design is that it takes less time to load in comparison to responsive design. As in adaptive design, there is no need to have all components.
Responsive Design: Dropbox’s website is a great example of responsive design. They use a fluid grid and flexible visuals to create a website that adjusts seamlessly to different screen sizes, providing an optimal user experience on various devices.
Adaptive Design: Dribbble, a self-promotional and portfolio platform, utilizes adaptive web design. The site demonstrates a good example of adaptive design by tailoring its layout to different devices, optimizing the user experience for each.
The key difference lies in the approach – responsive design embraces a one-size-fits-all mentality, while adaptive design tailors each frame according to the device’s ratio. Ultimately, the choice between these strategies depends on the specific needs of a project, each offering distinct advantages in terms of flexibility, load time, and user engagement. In short, both website strategies are used differently depending on the purpose. Both of the design structures make the design look user-friendly.
